Best game system for my needs: XBox360 or PS3?
I’m looking to add a gaming system to my household and am not sure which direction to go in. Here is what i’m looking for, which would best suite my needs, the XBox or PS3?
1) I want a system that has gaming options outside the standard shoot-em-up (Halo, Call of Duty) and sports (Football, basketball). I’m an oldtime gamer and would like to see some classics or versions of them. Mario, video arcade games, puzzle games. Maybe a snow/skateboarding game like SSX3 and Tony Hawk. The systems has to be useful for my girlfriend who isn’t into the violence and team sports…. A volleyball game would be totally cool for her… I’d love some classic Wolfenstein or other classic 1st person shootem ups… Some minor role playing maybe… I like Halo, etc but it isn’t my focus.. But something with a lot of variety. If it has BrainAge games, then its a major plus as I’m a psych major.
2) Obviously networkable. Preferably wireless but I have a bridge I can connect it to.
3) If it has a HDD for storage, I’d like to be able to expand upon it. Maybe an external drive or replace the internal with a larger drive.
4) I really want the ability to stream audio and video from my Windows XP desktop. I have nearly a terabyte of mp3 and video that I want to stream into my Bose system to which the gaming system will be attached.. Again, the gaming system should be able to navigate the music and videos on my XP machine. What format audio and video does each system prefer? I’ve heard some gaming systems prefer to interface with Vista or Win 7 but I’m not upgrading my PC to either…
5) Ability to play DVD-DL+R disks from my personal video collection.
6) If it can interface with Netflix, then awesome…
So, given the above, what do you recommend? I know there are different versions of each gaming system, which version? Without going overboard on the price..
In short …. Xbox360. (But get the Elite as it has true HDMI compatibility).
1) Much wider variety of games, plus you can download improved versions of classic games from the xbox live arcade.
2) Wireless adapter available at about $40/$60 running 805.1g protocol
3) 120gb storage but any standard HDD can be adapted for use.
4) Being a Microsoft machine it is made to run/synch with Windows Media Center

6) Don’t know, but you can dowload films from the marketplace and it has Sky player.

PS3, it designed in such a way that it should meet your needs now and over the next 5 years as DVDs become a thing of the past. You could buy a Xbox but you will have to buy about $300 worth of upgrades to get what you want.

Microsoft has an impressive gaming console in their Xbox 360
and there are some amazing titles exclusive to the Xbox, but
in the end you get less bang for your buck when compared to
the Playstation 3:
(1) Online gameplay: You can use the Playstation Network’s
online features without having to pay a subscription fee like
you do for the Xbox. I was never a big online gamer but now I
enjoy playing against opponents online.
(2) Internet connectivity: Built-in wireless internet
connectivity on the PS3 is a much better bet than having to
buy a wireless network adapter for the Xbox. Of course you can
simply rely on a wired Ethernet connection, but this might be
inconvenient depending on your set-up.
(3) High-Def Video: The Playstation 3 doubles as a Blu-Ray
player. Microsoft bet on the wrong horse when they were hoping
that HD-DVD would come out the winner in the high-def format
wars. If you want a Blu-Ray player/video game system combo,
the PS3 is a great device.
(4) Failure rate: The Xbox 360 has an absurdly high failure
rate, with estimates ranging between 30 to 50% ([...]). I
can’t verify the numbers, but know from my friends who own the
Xbox 360 that they’ve had a fair share of grief with their
systems.
Microsoft does have a few edges, namely the upcoming Project
Natal, unveiled at June’s E3. While Natal may ultimately be
one of the most amazing advances in video gaming, it
unfortunately is still some time off from being implemented.
That being said, the Playstation 3 is much more worth the cost
than the Xbox 360 – at least for now.

What James Bond movies should I buy?
Dilemma here.
I LOVE 007, but the films are highly inconsistent. From Russia With Love is one of my favorite movies ever, Casino Royale is extremely enjoyable, Licence to Kill is okay, and Die Another Day is the absolute worst.
I plan on buying several more Bond movies soon, but I am torn on which ones to buy. Here’s where you help!

I tend to love the grittier 007 movies, along with the old ones, and I don’t like a silly Bond. Connery’s the best to me, but I haven’t seen any w/ Moore. I plan on buying The Living Daylights, OHMSS, and a couple others.

If he was in it it would o fbeen a diffrent script, the whole film focusing or ending with him finally hunting down Blofeld for revenge and killing him. Like the YOLT book. Instead they totally ignore OHMSS, this one seems to take place after the YOLT film.
You Only Live Twice
Most moviegoers consider this movie way too silly or campy, but for me it’s one of my favs. I never get tired of this Bond movie. It’s hard taking your eyes off of Donald Pleasence as the sinister Blofeld. Pleasence captured the archetypal megalomaniac with elegant and terrifying grace. Without him, this film would have fallen flat. You Only Live Twice is up there with Dr. No, Goldfinger and From Russia With Love as my favorite Connery Bond films. I don’t care much for Thunderball (nor its 1980s remake).

Sean Connery — Dr No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger
George Lazenby – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (only one he did)
Roger Moore – Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy (last good Bond film he did)
Timothy Dalton – I don’t recommend either, but prefer License to Kill over the other. Grittier, more action, definitely Bond on revenge.
Pierce Brosnan – Goldeneye
Daniel Craig – Casino Royale (new one comes out this November, first true sequel to a Bond film, Quantam of Solace)
Definitely stay away from the original Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Both were Bond films but were not produced by Brocolli.
If you truly like Bond, you will eventually buy them all, but some of them you won’t watch as much as others.

Will my relationship work?
I have been accepted to a university in Brisbane to do my master’s degree. I currently live in Hobart with my boyfriend and he loves living in Hobart….My course lasts 1.5 years….I helped my boyfriend opening a business and he is doing well, however I do all his accounts as he does not know the computer system….He asked me why I can’t study in Tasmania, but I am not from this country, I am a foreigner and always wanted to live in another state…..I was going to move before but in the meantime I met my boyfriend….do you think we could work out what to do?, I don’t think he understand my desire to study as he does not have university degree….can anyone help me?, will he move with me eventually? or is it likely to break up??/, I love him very much….I am 30 years old and he is 33, we have been together for 2 years and all he wants is a family and a house….I want that too but not in Hobart…
maybe you just think you want to move. you might just be sick of where you live and want to see some place new. tell him that. try to explain it to him from your point of view so that he can better understand. you should try to go to the college you want. if you both in fact really do love each other than nothing should be able to break you up. and honestly you will never know the true answer of if you guys can or cannot work it out unless you try. going to this other college for a year might give the new scenery that you have been longing for. it will most likely give you the fulfillment you have been searching for. so i say go for the college. school shouldn’t ruin a relationship.

Sometimes home is where the heart is. About totally moving away : – What is it away from Hobart that you crave that you can’t get in Hobart? List those things down. Sometimes they are not as unattainable where you are as you think. Something’s gotta give. Having love means sometimes you have to let other things go. And finding someone to love who loves you back and who is good to you and good for you isn’t always easy. But I get that you have the spirit of adventure, satisfy that with other endeavours that gives you the same thrill as living in another state.
But I think going away to school for 1.5 years is a good idea. Last chance to indulge yourself before you settle down.

But, when she succumbs under the strain of guilt and does as he asks, it appears that he is too busy to carry his part of the load. In fact, it begins to look like Ellen’s father is more concerned with who is going to keep his life running smoothly than who will tend to his poor wife as she struggles with cancer. George Gulden is a gifted professor and English department head, but he is an unrealized novelist. His novel, “Come Back Inn,” is still unfinished after many years of torturous self-editing and rewrites long after the advance he received from his publisher is spent. Still, he basks in the reflected glow of more famous and successful writers with whom he maintains tenuous ties. This realization humanizes him for Ellen who has always revered her father as something of a literary giant in spite of his occassional daliances with graduate students. Kate Gulden, dying of cancer at only 48, loves life, and loves her children and her husband. When her suffering finally ends from an overdose of morphine, the District Attorney suspects Ellen of having helped her mother to end her life. In the end, though, it seems to be Kate who still nurtures them, somehow even from the grave. |
